My Approach

Three decades of clinical experience has taught me that there is no single type of therapy will work for everyone. My approach is an integrative one and  based on evidence-based and informed therapies. Existential Psychotherapy, Person Centred Counselling, Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing form the foundation of my approach. I am experienced working with a harm minimisation approach with substance use. I have a sound understanding of the 12-Step approach to addiction recovery.

Motivational Interviewing Training

Motivational Interviewing (MI) continues to be a valuable skill to help people to initiate and engage in behaviour change. Thirty years of clinical research, global dissemination and extensive practice has demonstrated the effectiveness and universality of MI.

Motivational Interviewing is: A person-centred and goal oriented approach to facilitating change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. The research informs us that, while MI is a simple approach, it does require appropriate training and brief skills coaching to reach proficiency.

Since 2003, I have been providing MI workshops in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, England, USA, Canada and Myanmar to wide range of professionals and organisations.

I provide all levels of MI training including: MI and Groups, MI skill assessment with the Motivational Interviewing Skill Code, Training of Trainers, and MI coaching and supervision. I have a passion for working on sustainable MI implementation projects with organisations. Please contact me directly to discuss training ideas and options drjoelporter@gmail.com.

While worrying and feeling nervous is something that we all experience, as with many things in life, too much of something may not be good for us. Normal anxiety can become a problem when it is excessive, feels uncontrollable, is experienced as intrusive and persistent in our lives. Sometimes worry causes us significant distress, or gets in the way going about out lives. What? Me Worry? is a free evidence based self-help workbook developed by the Centre for Clinical Intervention in Western Australia.

Addictions & Recovery

Addiction is one of the most common and misunderstood health conditions. Addiction  occurs when someone is unable to stop consuming a drug or activity, even if it is causing physical or psychological harm, or negatively affecting their life.  Addiction also does not discriminate, and can affect young and older people from all communities.

In Australia, one in five people will experience problems with alcohol, other drug use or gambling during their lifetime (Turning Point, 2024).

The good news is that addiction can be successfully managed with the right treatment and support. People who get help can achieve recovery, prevent relapses and experience an improved quality of life.
